The State of Podcasting 2021

How podcasters spend their time, develop content and work with PR

Podcasting has exploded in recent years. According to eMarketer, in 2021 monthly listenership in the US is predicted to increase by more than 10% year-over-year to 117.8 million.

It’s never been a more important time for PR pros and podcasters to build strong relationships. In our first-ever State of Podcasting survey, we set out to better understand podcasters’ biggest challenges and preferences.

Here's a sneak peek of the survey results:

  • The average podcaster covers 5 different roles at once. These include hosting (76%), writing/editing (63%), producing (62%), promotions/marketing (60%) and booking guests (58%)
  • Over 80% of podcasters are responsible for sourcing content for new episodes
  • The most common reasons why podcasters reject pitches are a lack of personalization (47%) or bad timing (42%)
  • Twitter is the most popular platform for podcasters to reach their audience (41%)
