The State of Journalism 2021

How journalists changed their reporting, social media habits, and preferences for working with PR pros in the year of COVID-19

We partnered with over a dozen journalist-focused organizations to survey 2400+ journalists about topics ranging from the challenges of reporting during COVID-19 to what they're looking for in pitches.

Here’s a sneak peek of findings from our 2021 survey:

  • The average journalist works 3 or more beats
  • 94% of journalists say that some, most or all of their reporting has pivoted to angles related to COVID-19
  • 76% of journalists say Twitter as the most valuable social network to them. 34% of journalists plan to cut back on Facebook.

  • The average journalist receives over 5 pitches per day but writes fewer than 5 stories a week, only 25% of which come from pitches
